The Depth of Art: Heart and Soul

I usually would refrain from posting this primarily because it's not about reviews or whatnot, but I think it's on subject, so it fits.

I'm going to discuss my opinion about artwork. Before I continue, whenever I say "artwork", I mean all forms. Not just pictures, but videos, music, models, costumes, clay, poetry, stories etc etc. whatever medium that is utilized creatively.

With that: we all have our specific likes and dislikes about artwork in general, I like to look a little deeper into the concept of the artwork. Some artwork I have looked at however, reveals a deeper sensation. I usually refer to this as artwork having a "heart and soul".
Primarily this heart and soul is revealing that the art has a value below the surface. It has effort and time put into it, and it shows. Not only that, but it gives you the sensation of emotion, that the creator has put an extra emphasis on the work and not simply pushed something out merely because of a deadline or because it sounds or looks or reads like a previous best-seller or popular item.

I am trying to be general about artwork because although I am primarily a writer and doodle a few images occasionally, I know artwork itself is almost infinite in the ways one can use and express it. I applaud such effort because there is an inherent beauty in crafting something out of a blank slate (so to speak).

I will not use specific references for what I would consider having a heart and soul because some would agree and others disagree, and that is perfectly normal.

What I am getting at is although a lot of flashy, brilliant and dazzling artwork can be eye-catching or pull in a lot of people, even those who may not have that level of ability can still encompass the very core of what giving artwork a heart and soul is.

It's not entirely based upon the skill, but how it's presented. Simply because artwork is made, does not make it evoke powerful imagery. It needs to have a basis behind it, a concept, an emotional input from the artist themselves.

Having artwork show it's heart and soul can be a rare thing with all that we are bombarded with these days, but I still have found many people who have put this heart into their work, regardless of skill level.

I believe that the ones that contain the essence of the deeper heart and soul of artwork are the ones that mean more, and last longer, because there is a loving detail put into the work that is specific to each individual.

Such artwork stays with us, because it has a meaning beyond the scope of the common artwork, it gives us something special.

Something profound and awe-inspiring.

  1. that is an interesting way to view it. Surely leaves us with something to think on. Whether or not we agree or disagree, and if we don't agree what is our opinion. To actually think on it further which in my case I had not bothered to do before. Incidentally I do agree with you so my thoughts are merely musing at this point. So from me I say well said Ilkarin, well done.
